Spotted in a Korean BBQ joint. Looks like a typo at first, but it's not. It's a sharp Korean pun. The sign reads: 어차피 인생은 고기서 고기다. To get it, you need one everyday Korean idiom: 👉 거기서 거기다 = "much of a muchness," "pretty much the same," "no real difference." So 어차피 인생은 거기서 거기다 = "Life's all the same anyway." Now look again. They swapped 거기 (there) → 고기 (meat) — one vowel, ㅓ → ㅗ: 거기서 거기다 → 고기서 고기다 So it sounds like "life's all the same anyway"… but lands as: 🥩 "In the end, it all comes down to meat." Spotted this kids' mouthwash, 어린이 가그린, and the design hides a perfect little pun. Look at the word 어린이 ("children"). The last letter, 이, isn't just written. It's drawn as a tooth. Why that's clever: 어린이 = children But 이 on its own = "tooth" in Korean (the native word — 치아 is the formal one) So the exact syllable that ends the word "children" is also the word for "tooth" and this is a tooth-care product for kids. Watching a K-drama as a learner? Pause often! Spending 10 hours on a drama is easy, but studying for 10 hours is tough. And I know that there’s tons of great, enjoyable Korean content out there now : ) But if you are spending quite a bit of time on Netflix or Spotify anyway, adding this one simple step of “pausing often” will help you greatly improve your learning speed and effectiveness. Input alone is not very effectively in language learning. Input actively noticing things and pausing to think will be incredibly effective. I was listening to an audiobook and the phrase “to purse one’s lips” kept coming up. That made me think about how I would say that in Korean, and I realized that I’ll have to “describe” or “explain” it with many more words in Korean depending on the context. These kinds of lexical gaps are always really fascinating to find and think about.
