Spotted in a Korean BBQ joint. Looks like a typo at first, but it's not. It's a sharp Korean pun. The sign reads: ์–ด์ฐจํ”ผ ์ธ์ƒ์€ ๊ณ ๊ธฐ์„œ ๊ณ ๊ธฐ๋‹ค. To get it, you need one everyday Korean idiom: ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ์„œ ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ๋‹ค = "much of a muchness," "pretty much the same," "no real difference." So ์–ด์ฐจํ”ผ ์ธ์ƒ์€ ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ์„œ ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ๋‹ค = "Life's all the same anyway." Now look again. They swapped ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ (there) โ†’ ๊ณ ๊ธฐ (meat) โ€” one vowel, ใ…“ โ†’ ใ…—: ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ์„œ ๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ๋‹ค โ†’ ๊ณ ๊ธฐ์„œ ๊ณ ๊ธฐ๋‹ค So it sounds like "life's all the same anyway"โ€ฆ but lands as: ๐Ÿฅฉ "In the end, it all comes down to meat." Pocket philosophy and a dinner invitation in one line. Would you like more posts like this? Let us know! #learnkorean #talktomeinkorean

Spotted this kids' mouthwash, ์–ด๋ฆฐ์ด ๊ฐ€๊ทธ๋ฆฐ, and the design hides a perfect little pun. Look at the word ์–ด๋ฆฐ์ด ("children"). The last letter, ์ด, isn't just written. It's drawn as a tooth. Why that's clever: ์–ด๋ฆฐ์ด = children But ์ด on its own = "tooth" in Korean (the native word โ€” ์น˜์•„ is the formal one) So the exact syllable that ends the word "children" is also the word for "tooth" and this is a tooth-care product for kids. The designer turned this coincidence into a picture. Would you like more posts like this? Let us know! #learnkorean #talktomeinkorean

Please break your language learning app streak ๐Ÿ“ต Consistency doesn't mean โ€œjust consistently opening the app." It means consistently learning. If nothing went into your head that day, you didnโ€™t really learn. Protecting the streak can feel nice and relieving, but itโ€™s not the same thing as consistency. So it's okay to skip a day! Donโ€™t be too obsessed with the streak number. By the way, what's your longest streak? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Watching a K-drama as a learner? Pause often! Spending 10 hours on a drama is easy, but studying for 10 hours is tough. And I know that thereโ€™s tons of great, enjoyable Korean content out there now : ) But if you are spending quite a bit of time on Netflix or Spotify anyway, adding this one simple step of โ€œpausing oftenโ€ will help you greatly improve your learning speed and effectiveness. Input alone is not very effectively in language learning. Input actively noticing things and pausing to think will be incredibly effective. Keep your notebook and pen close, and always be ready to pause that video or song and think for a few seconds! #learnkorean #talktomeinkorean

I was listening to an audiobook and the phrase โ€œto purse oneโ€™s lipsโ€ kept coming up. That made me think about how I would say that in Korean, and I realized that Iโ€™ll have to โ€œdescribeโ€ or โ€œexplainโ€ it with many more words in Korean depending on the context. These kinds of lexical gaps are always really fascinating to find and think about. In one language, you have a word or phrase that perfectly expresses something, and in a different language, you donโ€™t even have a word for it. What are some examples you can think of? : )

You will notice that many short Korean sentences have the exact same word repeated at the beginning and at the end. Why is that? Itโ€™s partially for emphasis and partially for the overall balance of the sentence.
