I took over for Speaker Pelosi, went into the Speaker’s Lobby, and saw this mad, deranged crowd smashing the glass, trying to get at us. 140 law enforcement officials were injured, and some died from their injuries. Staff were traumatized. If these people had gotten to us, they would have killed us. To call them hostages or political prisoners is grotesque. It shows that Donald Trump is a sick, demented man. I remember watching Republican colleagues crouch behind chairs in the House gallery, afraid for their lives, some on the verge of tears. This notion of saluting or praising those who caused this chaos, this violence, and harmed law enforcement is sickening—it makes me want to vomit. That’s why Trump cannot get anywhere near the White House. He is unfit to govern. It is quite frankly disgusting that he is the nominee of a major political party in this country. I hope he loses, and loses big.
