4 in 10 of the world’s top universities are in the UK and international staff and students have played a huge role in that. Thanks to @RupaHuq for pushing this message in parliament and challenging the visa changes driving global talent away. The Home Secretary says the changes “are not about students.” We’ll hold them to that.

We condemn the monstrous attack that took place on Monday evening on Stephen Ogilvy. Our thoughts are with him and his family. There can never be any justification for racism, vigilantism, or collective blame. We have seen attacks on homes, houses being set alight with families inside them, and the racist targeting of ethnic minority communities and migrants. We must stand with every family under attack and show that they are not alone, not forgotten and not abandoned. That is why we are gathering this Saturday for peaceful rallies in Belfast and Derry, and we ask for every UCU representative and member in Northern Ireland to make every effort to join. More than 100 MPs have now signed the motion I tabled alongside colleagues to disapprove the Equality Act 2010: Draft Code of Practice for Services, public functions and associations. This motion is currently the only available mechanism by which MPs can reject the EHRC’s Code of Practice; if debated and passed within the 40-day scrutiny window, it would prevent the EHRC from issuing the Code and bringing it into force. This is unfortunately unlikely, but it is important that as many MPs as possible sign the motion.
