Diego Maradona tested positive for five banned substances: ephedrine, norephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norpseudoephedrine and methaephedrine. As a result, he received a 15-month suspension from football and was forced to leave the Argentina national team camp.
After learning of the sanction, Maradona uttered his famous phrase, “They cut off my legs,” directed at both FIFA and Julio Grondona, then president of the AFA. The Argentine player accused the official of betrayal for making a deal with FIFA instead of trusting him and fighting to defend his innocence.
Years later, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) determined that the amount of these banned substances ingested by the Argentine star was not sufficient to be considered doping.
