We finished up a tremendous week on the west coast of Ireland at St Patrick’s Links at @Rosapenna1893. Such a fun course and the conditioning was wonderful - it’s running fast and true. My favourite course in the land!

In the last three days we’ve played Strandhill, County Sligo, Narin & Portnoo and Cruit Island. The wind has got progressively stronger every round, it was a good 4-5 clubs at Cruit. It’s a great place for golf, and good value compared to more well known Irish locations too. Well worth getting on your radar if you’ve not been here before.

What a day at @EnniscroneGolf yesterday. It’s a really enjoyable course. A great setting, wonderful holes (both in and out of the dunes) and it was in excellent condition. A real treat!

A fantastic day at @CarneGolfLinks today. The course is a joy to play and the experience was only enhanced by these two caddies. Ann and Cuan were born 67 years apart. Both have a huge pride in the club and were excellent caddies - they are a real credit to a special place.

Old Petty at @CabotHighlands was looking magnificent last night. It was my first time back there since the first day of preview play and it has already matured well. Going to be a hit I think!

I'm looking to organise some UK Golf Guy trips to slightly less traditional 'typical' golf tour places. This year we're going to South Korea, next year Japan (as well as the more obvious Aus & England). I'm thinking of India. Is that a step too far? I really want to see DLF!

Here’s my annual look at UK summer green fee increases - Average top 100 green fees are ⬆️11.4% - over 3X the rate of inflation - The average top 25 course is now £407 (up 15% on 2025) Here's a thread with some thoughts. You can read it all on my blog too. 🧵1/12

I have corrected the price for Prestwick on my blog which you can see here - ukgolfguy.com/golf-blog/2026… I had erronesouly compared this year's weekend price and last year's midweek price. Hence, this year's increase was 9% and last year's was 17%. Apologies for the error!

ST ANDREWS - LEADING THE WAY The Links Trust, the organisation who manage the 8 courses in St Andrews, run an increasingly meaningful initiative, The Drive. Scottish residents can apply for heavily discounted tee times across a range of Links Trust courses, including The Old Course. Outgoing Chief Executive, Neil Coulson, said about the initiative ‘Our vision for The Drive is not only to provide a bucket-list experience to thousands of people across Scotland, but to widen access to golf and encourage people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences to play’, When they debuted it in 2025 it was well received , though there was a little cynicism about the number of tee times on offer. But the good news is it appears they were just testing the water last year. The 2026 initiative takes it to another level. The Links Trust have tripled the number of places this year - there are 496 tee times available in total (for 1,984 players) including 56 (224 people) on the Old Course. The rates are incredible, so if you are lucky enough to get a place it is in the reach of everyone to play. Applications close 6 weeks before each date so if you are a Scottish resident you can still get your application in for this year. This is exactly the kind of initiative I have been banging on for several years that I wish clubs would offer. At this kind of volume it becomes more than a PR initiative, but a genuine attempt to allow the local golfer to play our classic courses. 🧵11/12

WHAT NEXT? International visitors bring a vital income to clubs. They spend in pro shops, stay in local hotels and support the wider economy. Jobs are created and communities thrive. But we should have more balance. We can’t allow our top clubs to become the preserve of American visitors. These are courses we should be able to experience, not just watch on TV. If you are a member at one of these clubs, why not suggest doing something a little different? Introduce a twilight rate for locals through the summer. Add an extra week at the start of the season with reduced pricing for domestic players. Or reopen in the winter for a morning each week with a sub £100 green fee and a bacon roll. Don’t forget, you benefit from this too. It opens the door to playing other courses that may currently feel out of reach. I genuinely believe change is possible. Imagine if every club focussed on just a couple of ways to bring the game back within reach of the average golfer. Our great golf course heritage is too important to be left entirely to market forces. 🧵12/12
