A $35k project came in once, and I said no. The budget was there. The project was big and exciting. But we weren't confident in the tech behind it, and I wasn't going to take someone's money on a "we'll probably figure it out." So we passed. Hard to do, but it was the right call. Around after that another client came with $15k , and that one was also slightly beyond us. The difference was, I could feel we'd get there if we pushed. So we took it, stretched, and pulled it off. That's the whole skill. Knowing when "we're not sure" means stretch, and when it means walk away.

A question for founders. When you've worked with designers, what actually drove you crazy? — Missed deadlines? — Going silent for days? — Having to explain the same thing three times? — Pretty work that didn't actually do anything for the business? I have my guesses, but I'd rather hear it from you. Drop it below, the more honest the better.

A client told me this week they decided to build it themselves. And honestly, fair. Most founders can build their own site. The question is what it costs them. Weeks of figuring out tools instead of running their company. A result that's "fine" but doesn't convert. And usually a quiet realization a month later that this wasn't worth their time. Some founders are happy to go through that. They want to learn it, tinker, own every pixel. Nothing wrong with that. But our actual clients are the ones who value their time and money too much to spend it there. They'd rather hand it off, trust the process, and stay focused on the thing only they can do, growing the business. That's the difference. They don't see us as a vendor they have to micromanage. They see us as a partner who handles it. We'll be here when the DIY route gets old

Took me a few years to learn this one. The design is only 50% the job. The other half is how the client feels the entire time you're working with them. You can deliver something beautiful and still lose the client if they spent the whole project anxious, chasing you for updates, unsure what's happening. And the opposite is true too. I've seen solid-but-not-genius work keep clients for years, just because they always felt taken care of. So I treat it as 50/50. Half the energy goes into the work. The other half goes into making sure the person on the other end never has to worry. Clients don't just remember what you made. They remember how it felt to work with you
