Did you know the U.S. Army was born from a top-secret mission? On June 14, 1775, Congress met behind closed doors to form the Army in total secrecy. The 1821 release of the "Secret Journals of Congress" proved how founders covertly secured our freedom. #DriveChangeForgeVictory
ALT Did you know the United States Army was born on a brilliant top-secret mission to protect American freedom?

On June 14, 1775, under tremendous pressure from the British crown, the Second Continental Congress boldly established the Continental Army. To protect their strategic plans and the young colonies, the delegates conducted their vital debates behind closed doors. They kept their military tactics in complete secrecy during a secured legislative session.

For decades the full extent of this strategic foresight remained a closely guarded secret. In 1821, the government succeeded in releasing the “Secret Journals of Congress” and unveiled the fabled hidden manuscripts explaining how our nation’s founders safely coordinated foreign aid, rallied local militias, and laid the groundwork for the world’s most powerful army. #DriveChangeForgeVictory

Did you know U.S. Army tank crews once wore black berets "off the books"? In the 1970s, tankers wore them to hide grease and clear tight gun sights. The trend grew until 2001, when the Army formally adopted the black beret as standard for all regular soldiers.
ALT Did you know that the black beret worn by the U.S. Army today was originally worn "off the books" by tank crews?

During the 1960s and 1970s, American armor and armored cavalry units unofficially adopted the black beret to mimic the historic British Royal Tank Regiment. The choice was highly practical because the soft wool didn't knock against structural frames or block narrow gun sights inside cramped vehicles, and the black color easily hid oil and grease stains. Local commanders tolerated the look to boost post-Vietnam troop morale, leading to a unique era where tankers customized their berets with colorful unit flashes and distinctive metal cavalry crests.

Although the Army cracked down on these unauthorized branch berets in 1978, the tradition paved the way for the beret to eventually become an official part of modern military uniform history.

#FunFactFriday #DriveChange
