Hypothesis: Lack of Coins Does Not Imply Barter
The assumption that early medieval societies without standardised coinage (e.g. Britain, 450–750 AD) relied on barter is weakly supported by archaeological or ethnographic evidence. 🧵

When formal coinage disappears or isn’t available, people don’t revert to pure barter. They use what’s at hand, things like buttons, to keep everyday commerce moving.

That’s a pattern we see across time and place. Human societies are practical, and past people were just as resourceful and organisational capable as we are today.
The Anglish Rune font can be downloaded from the website uslearen.com . Just change the font and you have runes. Anglo-Saxon glyphs optional to your taste!
I made a Anglo-Saxon/Frisian Runes based font called Anglish Runes, it uses rune characters for the alphabet.
