I wanted to visualize--how many folks on U.S. soil right now are waiting to hear back about an asylum claim? Or are waiting to be deported?
As of September 2023, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University reports that the total backlog of such migrant court cases stands at 2.6 million.
Compared to the over 335 million Americans, what proportion does this represent?
Political rhetoric often suggests that our cities cannot accommodate these individuals, implying that our resources will be depleted before we can offer aid, and framing this situation as a massive invasion.
To put it in perspective, the current number of migrants in the U.S. awaiting these court cases is comparable to five individuals seeking assistance from a community of 670 people.
