El Rocio might be the strangest village in Spain: sandy streets, horses tied outside every house, flamingos in the lagoon. Pure Wild West, Andalusian style. We wrote the complete motorhome guide here: vantour.net/el-rocio-motorho…

A spot right on the Canal du Midi in Castelnaudary, southern France. Barges gliding by, plane trees above, and the aroma of cassoulet wafting nearby. The kind of leisurely stop that makes you forget all about your itinerary. Would you linger here?

We tasted Jose Rodriguez's wine in the Douro Valley, reds cultivated on schist, with a mineral edge you won't find anywhere else. And the tip we've held onto ever since: soak your home olives in water for a few days to eliminate the bitterness. The land speaks for itself.

At Chateau de Nitray in the Loire, we met Francois, an engineer who gave it all up to create natural wine. Ancestral-method pet-nat, wild ferments, ten hectares transitioning to organic. We cherish these visits: you walk away with bottles and the entire life story of someone. 🍷✨

Slow mornings with coffee in the doorway, or up and driving at dawn? ☕🌅

Convert a van yourself, or buy one ready to hit the road? What would you actually choose?

Capbreton, on the Landes coast, where we paid 8 euros for a spot in November with the beach all to ourselves. Just offshore lies the Gouf, an underwater canyon over 3,000 meters deep, plunging right next to a tranquil seaside town. Wild what lurks beneath the calm water.

Best meal you've ever had on the road. What was it, and where?

Solar and batteries, or just plug in at campsites? How do you power your van?

A fun fact from the Camargue: flamingos are pink because of their diet, the tiny shrimp found in the lagoons. Change their food and they turn white. Nature handling its own marketing. We saw hundreds of them near Salin-de-Giraud.

Cooking in the van every night, or dining out wherever you end up? Which side are you on?
26
Do you map out your journey, or do you just hit the road and see where it takes you?

Coimbra and its university, one of the oldest in Europe, sitting high above the city. Students in black capes, a baroque library, the river below. We parked nearby, a bit noisy, we’ll admit. Can you picture yourself here?

At a winery in the Alpilles, we attempted to adopt the house cat, Yang. Seduction strategy: complete failure, the cat took off the moment I started eating broccoli. The plane tree in the yard is apparently 250 years old, the second oldest in France. Good day nonetheless.

Bethune, in northern France, and its UNESCO belfry overlooking the main square. We're not a married couple, and we don't pretend to be. What we are is two people who will travel a long way for proper moules-frites. We found them right here.

What's the one piece of gear you'd never hit the road without?

Could you trade a permanent home for a life on the road, with no turning back?

Lagos, where the golden cliffs of the Algarve plunge into almost surreal turquoise waters. Sea caves, secluded coves, and yes, a bustling old town. Our complete guide for vanlifers, featuring the spots still worth your time: vantour.net/discovering-lago…

Aigues-Mortes, deep in the Camargue. A whole town enclosed within medieval walls, nestled amidst pink salt marshes. Climb the towers and you can see for miles: salt on one side, flamingos on the other. Can you picture yourself here?

Up in north-east Portugal, in Bragança, we dined at Rosina's for 10 euros a head and slept for free in the aire beneath the castle. The Portugal that hasn't quite figured it out could charge us more. Long may it last. We said nothing.
