Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. In memory of David Lynch, we will continue to explore the otherworldly and the unknown. We will focus not on the loss, but on what we gained from the years we shared this planet with you. We will see you in our dreams.

In what might be my final post in this place... Our newest paper in Nature Cardiovascular Research! Led by an amazing grad student Joanna Wong. We demonstrate pulmonary veins sprout and differentiate into capillary cells after severe lung injury. nature.com/articles/s44161-0…

NIH is so f'ed
14 Nov 2024
Robert Kennedy Jr., one of the most anti-science figures in the world, will oversee a vast bureaucracy with a discretionary budget of nearly $150 billion annually and a mandatory budget of nearly $2 trillion. HHS and its various agencies have profound regulatory powers that impact the healthcare of not only hundreds of millions of Americans but also the global healthcare community. The following agencies will be under his control as Secretary of Health and Human Services: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Food and Drug Administration (FDA) National Institutes of Health (NIH) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Administration for Community Living (ACL) Indian Health Service (IHS) Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

Whelp. Maybe a good time to mention that I am about to open a new PhD position in Sweden that just happens to be exactly four years in length. Any aspiring PhD candidates in neurodegenerative imaging or multiomics who want to "take a break" from the US, please get in touch!

A few years back the Werner Twertzog account wrote this famous post. It still works, but now it’s closer to 1/2, and there are no more spectators.

Pretty far down the list of impending doom concerns but I think us basic research biologists need to prepare for draconian NIH slashes and a new reality of 1-2 person labs. Hope I’m wrong.

Reposting this because it’s really clear that all we have for the immediate future and maybe the rest of our lives is solidarity with other Americans who haven’t lost their minds to hate and greed.
Whatever happens today I feel very lucky to live in West Philly, blanketed by both Harris Walz and Ceasefire Now signs. At least my neighbors have their heads screwed on straight!

Again, don’t listen to silliness like this. Kamala had a vision. Trump had vibes and racism. This isn’t about who had a better platform. This was a doubling down on America’s original premise — white supremacy.
maybe, just maybe, the democrats should try offering voters a vision of the future or any value proposition besides not being the other guy. just a thought

lock tf in. get your ass in mutual aid groups. lend your time to meal services. care for people in the way a vote simply never could. advocate for community gardens and libraries. stop betraying community. you don’t get a sticker or gold star. lock in.

I agree. But what’s also even more true is that most Americans aren’t using language like fascism or democracy. Trump ran on grievance and resentment and used. We simple and easy words to use that tapped into peoples’ fears. America is more far right than people want to accept. It isn’t just at the presidential level. Many progressive agendas were also defeated at the lower levels. American is a white-tocracy and many “POC” (I use “” because it’s becoming a bit nebulous) and we need to realize that much of this country is OK with that.

the replies to this is the proof of why exactly it wasn’t about kamala not being progressive enough, americans just chose fascism and this time not even because of the russian interference

Just keep thinking about how superior Harris’s ground game was and how it didn’t even matter at all.

In the coming days there's gonna be a lot of opining about what the Harris campaign did wrong, but this election was not an indictment of Kamala Harris. It was an indictment of America.
