This year’s farm bill reflects something of a revolution—so many voices, on left and right alike, saying we shouldn’t torture pigs. Good to see faith leaders stepping up in a big way to join this effort.
Hundreds of clergy and faith leaders across 30 traditions signed a letter calling on senators to strip the “Save Our Bacon” amendment from the Farm Bill. It's being hand-delivered to all 100 U.S. Senate offices right now. farmforward.com/news/a-moral…

If you want to move towards a vegan diet, the most effective way to make rapid progress is to try at least 3 to 5 new vegan foods a week—these can include any item from the grocery store, a new recipe you make yourself, or something you order at a restaurant.

One bummer about the rise of oat and almond milk is that it cannibalized soy milk's share of the market, leading to many grocery stores reducing the soy milk varieties they keep in stock. A serious bummer given that soy milk is WAY more nutritious—around 7 grams of protein per serving compared to just a gram in most almond milks. For the past few years, Trader Joe's only offered soy milk in aseptic juice boxes, which are expensive and entail much more waste. So I was delighted to discover today that Trader Joe's just went back to carrying soy milk in classic half-gallon refrigerated milk cartons.

A beautiful and compelling case against cruelty toward pigs and opposition to the notorious "Save Our Bacon" Act from being in the upcoming Farm Bill. @NickKristof wrote “For me, the prime concern is animal cruelty. To confine animals in stinking cages, so many never see the sun or touch earth, is to deny their very nature. The ethos was described in a 1976 article in Hog Farm Management that said: “Forget the pig is an animal. Treat him just like a machine in a factory.”” And, “The trade-offs are real, for the pork industry indeed excels at producing cheap sausage, but think of your dog enduring what pigs face, and you realize that the moral cost is incalculable.”
Here's what the pork industry doesn't want you to know about the way it sneaked a provision into the 2026 farm bill that would nullify ballot measures that improve animal welfare, while helping Chinese companies torture American pigs. The issue is personal to me, because we once raised pigs on our family farm, and I saw that these are not commodities but animals rather like dogs: smart with very distinct personalities. A naughty boy who punishes a single animal may be punished, but an adult who presides over the systematic abuse of hundreds of thousands of pigs as a business model is hailed as a visionary CEO -- and voters get that, and that's why they have backed laws that improve animal wellbeing. This is, remarkably, an issue that unites many liberals and conservatives alike; @TomiLahren, @Cernovich and @IngrahamAngle are among those who have been outspoken on this issue. I hope R and D members of Congress alike will stand firm, for the stakes are immense, with four pigs slaughtered around the clock on average all year. Here's a gift link to my piece: nytimes.com/2026/05/30/opini… I welcome your comments.

Update since the thread below. The Senate Ag Committee held a closed-door meeting last week, during which the committee’s chairman, Senator Boozman (R-AR) announced that he'll not include Save Our Bacon in the starting draft of the Senate farm bill. That’s a real win — thanks to so many, SOB has become so controversial that even the committee chairman wants to avoid it. But the fight is far from over. Even though SOB won’t be in the opening draft, individual senators on the Agriculture Committee can (and likely will) still try to add it back in through an amendment. Please call your senators today and tell them: do not pass a Farm Bill that contains the SOB Act. The Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. Thank you.
The pork industry lost with voters. Lost at the Supreme Court. So they turned to Congress—and got the "Save Our Bacon" Act buried in the House Farm Bill. It's the biggest rollback of animal welfare protections in U.S. history. A thread. 🧵

.@KristaKafer nailed it. Referring to gestation crates where mother pigs are confined in cages so small they're unable to ever turn around, she writes "Think Medieval torture chamber for animals. Better yet, Google the terms and see for yourself." Powerful piece against the notorious Save Our Bacon act.
CO led the way in adopting humane farming practices. Now the U.S. House is trying to stop that momentum. @SenatorHick @SenatorBennet Please amend the Farm Bill to ensure states can protect animals from inhumane treatment. Thank you! #copolitics denverpost.com/2026/05/18/an…
