The 2024 World Malaria Report is out! It shows we've collectively prevented 2.2 billion malaria cases and saved 12.7 million lives since 2000. Even better – 44 countries are now malaria-free, with more on the path to join their ranks.
Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are fundamental to malaria control, and it is heartening to see that in 2023, household ITN ownership in sub-Saharan Africa reached 73%.
In March 2023,
@WHO recommended the use of dual pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr bed nets in areas battling insecticide resistance – the first of an emerging, next-generation arsenal of tools.
In 2023, 78% of ITNs delivered to sub-Saharan Africa were either PBO or dual active-ingredient nets.
But while we celebrate these successes, there is still a lot of work to do. With 263 million cases and 597,000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2023, there were about 11 million more cases than in 2022. A US$4.3 billion funding gap is slowing innovation and limiting access to essential new tools.
Following
@WHO's recommendation for dual active-ingredient nets, we pulled out all the stops to scale up as fast as possible. Everyone at risk for malaria should be able to sleep safely.
Working in partnership with the malaria community, we will continue to push forward together!
