My postdoc salary when I left in May last year was just above the Toronto minimum living wage. Colleagues of mine who were less senior postdocs were receiving less than the Toronto minimum living wage. We are all in our thirties with 2-3 degrees and 10 years of experience.
Without a renewed effort from government to support fundamental, discovery-oriented research, Canada risks falling behind on rapidly evolving science and innovation which is essential to Canadian prosperity. #Budget2023 ⬇️ univcan.ca/media-room/media-…

I should point out that it was just above minimum living wage *based on 8 hours a day 5 days a week* which is not reality by a long shot.

How bad are postdoc salaries in Canada? Well, a couple of friends of mine who left academia in the past year or so doubled their salary in one move. That's not a reflection of inflated industry salaries (at their level anyway) - that's just fair pay for their skills.

The Canadian football teams are really in need of a proper chant. May I suggest a @NUFC style "Plaid, plaid red and white army!"

Today I very briefly returned to the lab at lunchtime to help a former colleague of mine with an experiment. Can confirm that after 10 months, pipetting organoid domes is like riding a bike 🥹

Researchers working with patients/people with lived experience (PWLE) in Canada. Has the T4 reporting threshold of $500 been a barrier to your patient partnership efforts? Please get in touch...cooking an idea with colleagues...

Equally - if you are an advocate/patient/person with lived experience, have you ever turned down an engagement opportunity and/or $ because it would have made your tax situation difficult/impossible? My DMs are open if you want to share, but not publicly (i'll keep confidential)

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm noting down all of your names and will put you in the loop after an initial meeting with a colleague later this week to decide exactly what we want to do!

I'm a Leafs fan, but this jersey 😍
We're proud to reveal our 2023 Pride Night jersey, designed by local artist Megan Parker! We'll be wearing these amazing jerseys during warm-ups ahead of our Mar. 28 game vs. LA 🌈 They will be signed and auctioned off in support of the CSEC Inclusion Program!

Yesterday, I got really quite excited about a recipe for "carrot cake" overnight oats. I made it and it is good 🥲 Middle-aged Monday is going well so far.

Whether you like them or not, or agree with their politics: Chrystia Freeland was a Rhodes Scholar and went to Harvard and Oxford. Anita Anand has four degrees, is a lawyer and was a prof at UofT. Imagine posting this and thinking its a good idea.
Replying to @lisakirbie
Imagine being a woman in Trudeau’s cabinet and not knowing if it was merit or gender that got you there.

Also irrespective of partisanship, always deeply, deeply disappointing to see women lean into misogyny for any reason.

This flavour of Canadian politics is bitter and low and only appeals to misogynists. If that's a political recruitment tactic, then that's a damn shame. People need to be better than this.
