AI automation is bad for people who see their work as a terminal value (it’s good that I do the thing I do) but good for people who see work as instrumental to building and creating (it’s good that I can make this thing happen). Many people will have to reconsider their identity

We can make pokemon real !
Universal is putting dragon costumes on the Boston Dynamics robots, and they are insanely cute

Incredible post on ghibli images and Art by Scott Alexander “We gripe about how LLMs are destroying wonder, never thinking about how we’re speaking to an alien intelligence made by etching strange sigils on a tiny glass wafer on a mountainous jungle island off the coast of China, then converting every book ever written into electricity and blasting them through the sigils at near-light-speed. It’s all amazing, and we’re bored to death of all of it.”

Ok time to update timelines…

I asked chatgpt's new image model to script and generate a series of comics starring itself as the main character. The results genuinely gave me chills. I'll post them all in a thread below.

That Anthropic can put a date on a “Claude pioneer” makes me feel like they’ve seen new evidence of knowledge creation from their latest internal model AFAICT, the jury’s out on whether this is possible at all (w/ current paradigms)

Maybe they found the answer…
I still haven't heard a good answer to this question, on or off the podcast. AI researchers often tell me, "Don't worry bout it, scale solves this." But what is the rebuttal to someone who argues that this indicates a fundamental limitation?

This seems… significant somehow
Claude gets stuck while playing Pokemon and tries a new strategy - writing a formal letter to Anthropic employees asking to reset the game

we should all feel an obligation to tell stories about a human future that we actually want to be a part of.

I don't think people have fully internalized the consequences of this simple fact: any behavior that can be described on a computer, and for which it is possible in principle to collect enough data or evaluate the result automatically, *will* be doable by AI in short order.

Even if models never create new problem-solving methods, as they scale, they’ll get better at knowing when to apply what. I expect they will create new methods, and discover methods for creating methods, etc. With enough training, they really could become universal.

Replying to @gfodor @karpathy
I wonder if the models will only rediscover known problem-solving methods or create new ones. When they learn to create new problem-solving methods to solve new problems, we can call them truly creative
