To build in 15th-c. Rome, one had to acquire a "petraria" warrant, identifying which older buildings would provide reused masonry building material. The marble loggia of Old Saint Peter's, for example, was built from the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla and other structures.

Went to an excellent lecture by Carol W. Smith yesterday @CarpentersHall. I didn't realize how large and significant this topic was until she explained the relationship between colonial insurance companies, the Carpenters Company, and the mapping of the built environment.
