So wonderful to get to chat with Maggie McPherson from @SenKatieBritt’s office! We talked about how important it is to maintain research stability, and how recent administration actions have destabilized it. It was a great conversation!

So great talking with Megan Medley from Rep. @Robert_Aderholt's office today. We discussed how important it is to maintain stability for the US research enterprise, and how recent actions by the administration have destabilized it. Don't destabilize the US! #neuroadvocate

Caleb is a biomedical scientist who worked on mouse models of disease when he was an undergrad at Auburn (!! AWESOME!!!). He and @flubinlab had some really in-depth discussions about new techniques to administer treatments for neurological diseases.

Help. I am keeping a running list of #neurotheory / #comp_neuro / #neuroAI / #quant_neuro groups that currently has 222 names; def. incomplete, especially re: younger groups. If you started a group since COVID, or if you want to know if you made my list, give me a ping. RT@ H'sD

On behalf of our department head, @Li_Zhaoping: I’m thrilled that @HopfieldJohn has won the #NobelPrize in Physics for his groundbreaking work on artificial neural networks! Very grateful for his mentorship and belief in my V1 Saliency Hypothesis long before its recognition!

We shouldn't let this get swept away by the constantly changing news cycle. This is a premier data resource setting a dangerous precedent of pay to play. Not a policy conducive of a healthy scientific community.

The weight of neuroscientific evidence has demonstrated that the brain is organized into distinct cortical areas, which perform dissociable sets of information processing operations There are additional ideas about how the cortex may be organized, including smoother transitions/gradients, and equipotentiality (everywhere can/does do everything; including softer versions of this theory which acknowledge sensory & motor areas as being distinct). Some of these ideas have been reinvigorated by recent observations from human neuroimaging. New/refined hypotheses are critical to advance our understanding of the brain, but models of brain organization can’t live in the silo of a given method (which can be prone to unique sources of bias/error), as they need to be able to explain other sources of evidence (work in animal neuroanatomy & physiology, lesion studies in humans, etc.) Our thoughts on these issues, and a primer on cortical arealization now available here: cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S08… Plus see below for Evan’s detailed thread on the paper

Something literally everyone said at the time, and yet ….
College admission essay content has a stronger correlation with household income (R2 = 16%) than SAT scores. This explains how removing standardized tests can increase inequality. Based on 240,000 admission essays to the University of California. science.org/doi/full/10.1126…
