The Washington Post has tallied at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits behind his companies.
In January SpaceX’s board awarded him 1 billion more shares that fully vest only if the company puts a permanent colony of one million people on Mars. The trillion he has now can be borrowed against tax free.
He didn’t beat the government to Mars. He billed it.
