The US seriously considered annexing all of Mexico, which relinquished about a third of territory. Yet...US agreed to pay $15 million for the territory and cover an additional $3 to $5 million in damages to the property of Mexican citizens. At the time, that was an ABSOULTELY INSANE amount of money...given that the federal government's annual revenue was only $35.4 million! That would be the equivalent of the US paying about $4 trillion today. Why did we do this? Paying helped Mexico's fragile government survive so they could accept and enforce the terms... lending the treaty more stability. Monetary compensating for defeated nations is EXTREMLY COMMON historically for this reason. That's why the US paid to rebuild Europe and Japan after World War 2.
