The Netherlands wear orange because of their royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau, not because of their flag. 🇳🇱🧡
House of Orange-Nassau
Here's the story:
In the 16th century, William of Orange led the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule.
He became a national hero and the founder of the Dutch royal lineage.
The word "Orange" in his title came from the Principality of Orange in what is now southern France.
Over time, orange became a symbol of Dutch national pride, unity, and the monarchy.
That's why you'll see:
The Dutch national football team nicknamed Oranje ("Orange")
Fans dressed head-to-toe in orange at sporting events
Orange decorations during national celebrations such as King's Day...
PS: The original Dutch flag was originally orange, white, and blue ("Prince's Flag"), but the orange stripe was later changed to red.
