We study mechano-biological mechanisms of brain aging, neurodegeneration, and traumatic brain injury to predict brain changes with age and to detect abnormal changes resulting from disease. We know that mechanics plays an important role in many neuropathological mechanisms.

Therefore, we use modeling to capture the coupling between the neurobiology of aging and mechanics-driven brain shape changes. Latter are particularly interesting because they are visible on MRI and therefore a sensitive marker for abnormal developments. Email me if interested!

Brain aging is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration that causes cognitive slowing and functional decline. Over time, cell-level changes manifest as organ-level brain shape changes in the form of cortical thinning, white matter shrinking, and ventricular enlargement.

We will combine medical image registration, brain tissue experiments, and constitutive modeling to uncover the relationship between organ-level tissue volume loss and periventricular tissue degeneration during normal aging.

Stevens is part of this consortium and this initiative is a game changer for our students that now get to take classes beyond what each school can offer individually!! I will definitely encourage my students to take advantage of this great effort 🎉
We have joined a consortium with 8 other NYC graduate engineering programs that allows doctoral students at any of the affiliated programs to take courses at each other’s institutions.
