2016년 여름, 스위스 알프스 김멜발트. 헝가리인 등산객은 발목을 접질린 채 지도를 펴들고 있었다. 스키 시즌이 끝나 리프트는 멈췄고, 유일한 공식 하산로는 통제 구역이었다. 그때 흑백 털 고양이 한 마리가 다가왔다. 조용히, 아무 이유도 없다는 듯이.
남자가 일어서자 고양이는 앞으로 걷기 시작했다. 그리고 뒤를 돌아봤다. 따라오는지 확인하듯. 남자는 따라갔다. 달리 선택지가 없었다.
고양이는 한 번도 잘못된 방향으로 가지 않았다. 계곡으로 내려가는 길목까지 데려다준 뒤 그 자리에서 멈췄다. 여기까지라는 듯이. 지킬 구역이 있었으니까.
나중에 레딧에 올라온 영상에 댓글이 쏟아졌다. 같은 고양이를 기억하는 여행자들이었다. 이름도 없고, 훈련도 받지 않은, 마을 어딘가에 사는 그 고양이를.
그저 고양이가 뒤돌아봤을 뿐이다. 한 사람들의 목숨을 건졌다.
