It's too easy to mistake self-soothing behaviors for craft.

I wonder what anyone who can't find beauty in abstract expressionism sees when they look at the sky.

I'm obviously unqualified to comment on the blackness angle here, but regarding blindness to history: I think that we were wrong to annihilate the distinction between high and low culture in the name of egalitarianism. We shouldn't treat all media like art and all art like media.
As a black man, I believe fear of vulnerability is the biggest hurdle for men expressing the types of art they enjoy or are curious about. Anime and video games are okay, but our present crises demand an examination of history, which only literature provides. We need to organize

And, listen, there's nothing wrong with consuming pure media for comfort or enjoyment. I spent like a year too depressed to do anything but watch youtube videos. Sometimes you just have to survive at all costs, and there's plenty of joy to be found in "consuming content."

But the end result of pretending that anything with words is as good as literature and anything you can watch on a screen is as good as a film, whatever the good intentions, has been a more regressive and reactionary culture, not a more democratic or compassionate one.

Indie authors have somehow invented a form of audience capture that doesn't require an audience.

Everybody wants to sit atop the ashes of their ruined life, picking at their boils with a filthy shard of broken pottery, but no one is willing to curse god and die.

Absolutely insane to call Catch-22, a meticulously constructed satire where jokes are often paid off pages (and even chapters) after their initial setup, "scribbled without any preparation or thought."
It's incredible how awful some of this 20th century fiction is. It feels like something scribbled without any preparation or thought: Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, Catch-22, Basketball Diaries, On The Road. I despised all this nonsense and resented being forced to read it.

Have plans with family tonight, so I'm squeezing half an hour of listening to "Stairwell Song" on repeat while holding back tears into the middle of the day instead of waiting for midnight. Let no one say that I failed to make the most of the final moments of 2024.

Wonderfully incisive (and only occasionally vicious) review. Love the phrase "defamation by way of lyrical style."

Even ignoring the insane suggestion that drabness is more realistic, the idea that dreamlike color diminishes a movie's emotional stakes may be one of the most profound misunderstandings of film history ever.
Jon M. Chu responds to criticism of certain scenes looking too desaturated in ‘WICKED’: “There’s colour all over it. I think what we wanted to do was immerse people into Oz, to make it a real place. Because if it was a fake place, if it was a dream in someone's mind, then the real relationships and the stakes that these two girls are going through wouldn't feel real” (Source: theglobeandmail.com/arts/fil…)

Oops.
Have there been any great rap albums released this year? I feel like 2024 has been a great year for music broadly, but a surprisingly mediocre/disappointing one for rap.
