So I was conversing with a dear friend about how much the inauthenticity of social media bothers me deeply. I have a visceral response to it, which causes me to skulk off in a corner and stay quiet. But, she rightfully pointed out that if I don't speak my truth—if I don't show up as the authentic presence that I crave— then I am just contributing to the current dynamic. A non-vote is a vote, especially this year.

Politics becomes so divorced from reality as to destroy our sense of moral judgment when ideological victory becomes more important than human life. And what is lost is human life.

I finished teaching a course on evil last Thursday. The last reading we discussed was Hannah Arendt’s “Thinking and Moral Considerations.” In the essay Arendt asks how politics can become so divorced from reality as to destroy our sense of moral judgment.
