A new study published this week in @JAppliedEcology by NYC Audubon and research partners shows that weather forecasts and bird migration intensity data can be used to predict which nights pose the greatest collision risks for birds in urban areas. nycaudubon.org/blog/study-sh…

We found that nights with headwind conditions for migrating birds and winds that blew birds toward the coastal city had higher numbers of window collision victims, and that visibility also played a role.

We know that turning the #LightsOut in buildings can reduce collisions, but getting building owners and occupants to sustain this over a full migration season is a barrier. We also knew that even during peak migration, some nights are more dangerous to birds than others
