😆Our #TEDTalks is finally here!
Systemic problems require systemic solutions. To save the future of STEM, we need to build #intersectionality into the cultural DNA of who does science, how we fund science, how we communicate science & who it truly serves youtu.be/JOayfGNRw2o
I just started following @wokeSTEM and you should, too. WokeSTEM is a creative response to the lack of diversity, social equity and inclusive cultures for minoritized people in STEM. Not just for women. Check them out and sign up for updates! wokestem.com/aboutus
Get inspired for the upcoming week by watching @sokonkwo_'s powerful TED talk about intersectionality, representation, and discrimination in STEM! @sokonkwo_ is also the founder of @wokeSTEM, check out their website here: wokestem.com/
Yesterday I met Shawntel (I should say DOCTOR Shawntel as of recently!) who founded @wokeSTEM! If you don't already follow then you're missing out.
Shawntel is one of this year's emerging producers at World Congress of Science and Factual Producers. One to watch! 🙌

A Black Scholar Thread: ✊🏾🧠⚡️
Who are you?
What do you study or research?
What institution do you attend?
What program (MA,JD, PhD, Mdiv, M.Ed, etc) are you in?
🗣Flex ya brilliance!
Use all the syllables!! Don’t be humble!
This was an amazing program. I’ll try to pull together all the twitter handles/info of participants. Check out @_STEMedia and STEMSuccessSummit.com for more info, videos, resources! They‘ve collab’d with @wokeSTEM, too! #BLACKandSTEM#marginsci
This awesome TED talk by Shawntel Okonkwo, founder of @wokeSTEM, explains how overlapping forms of discrimination leave some people & perspectives out of STEM. Like wokeSTEM, we're working to de-stigmatize STEM and make it accessible for all. #FollowFridayyoutube.com/watch?v=JOayfGNR…

So true. Ben Carson was all we had (or knew of) and he was a god-like figure for many of us young African-Americans interested in science and medicine. Here’s to hoping that the next generation has a wider pool of role models.
scientists? As a kid, I always said Ben Carson was my role model, not because I wanted to be a surgeon, but because he was the only black male I knew within medical research. So how about we talk about an underrepresented (and under-promoted) population of scientists!
Yesterday I really took in that I am #FirstInTheFamily to do this. My family afforded me this opportunity. Whatever doubts I have had I can say - IT WAS WORTH IT...And now I am ready to use this to do more & make change
