#TBT Carosal (2005-2018) the coyote was the embodiment of "tiny but mighty.” Her small stature didn’t stop her from trash-talking her neighbors & bossing around her companions. Truly a force to be reckoned with, her feisty spirit left a lasting mark at Wolf Haven.

Early summer is transformational for wolves, as they shed out their thick summer coats for sleek summer looks. There is, however, an awkward "in-between style" that makes us smile and shake our heads. The majestic are temporarily humbled, as wolfdogs Lore and Luca illustrate.

Mexican wolf M1630 (Darko) was recently removed from his family group due to aggression issues. He was the leader of the group, but was pushed out by his brothers challenging him. We paired Darko with F1361 (Sedona), where he has been enjoying the smells of his new enclosure!

What’s the Layla and Lore update, you ask? Still playing, of course! Chill Lore often starts play on his back, until Layla excites him enough to leap up and face her on his feet. These two make such a dynamic duo! #wolfhaven #sanctuary #education #conservation #wolves #wolfdogs

Western thatch ants are regularly sighted on Wolf Haven's property & the sanctuary alone hosts dozens of communal thatch ant mounds. These mounds are primarily made of Douglas fir needles, twigs, and dried grasses, which can reach up to 3 feet tall & support thousands of ants.

#Throwback Wolves grow a heavy coat during the winter, but taking it off for warmer weather is not so easy. One of our late McCleery wolves, Lefty, loved to demonstrate how a scratching post could aid in the shedding process as well as scratch those hard-to-reach places 💚

We can all relate to the experience of overnight hunger... American Red Wolf F2215 (Carmin) chose to quell her rumbling belly by munching on a salmon she saved from an earlier feeding. The trait of caching part of their food to eat later is something many of our residents exhibit

Being in the sanctuary as little as possible means we get behavior insights from remote cameras. However, there are other signs we look for, such as these paw prints inside a splash tub. Seeing who enjoys water can help us decide to get bigger water features for those animals.

We’re so grateful to provide our McCleery residents with enclosures that reflect a natural environment. Each spans an acre, and while no manmade space can replace the territory of wild wolves, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the wolves exploring & taking in the big Montana views

A trail camera placed in their shelter pen revealed nighttime play between the brother-sister duo, Tarragon & Valerian. But don’t let this sweet sight make you forget about their mischievous sides... they later removed the strap from this trail camera and cached it in their straw

Wolves are typically born late April-early May, so we celebrated the residents of our McCleery Ranch sanctuary with enrichment cupcakes made of peanut butter, yogurt, and blueberries topped with fish oil (yum!) Stay tuned for the Tenino wolves' birthday surprises next week 🥳
