Those that remember the old Level 7 corner, it was something to behold, and hopefully those that move there make it brilliant once again. It was like an away end at home, superb.
As the article mentions our survey, we thought we’d share some of the results from that, which almost 6000 of you filled in, and what our belief is moving forward.
73.9% said the atmosphere had worsened in the last two seasons. Many supporters cited the ticketing system as having an impact, with fans more unable to move/book tickets near friends and family. Another change that has been implemented by the club.
72% of respondents supported the idea of a dedicated section for singing, 59.8% said they would want to be in it, and whilst we hate that this would be needed, it’s the reality of the situation.
76% of respondents said they believed the standing section in the Strawberry Corner should be extended into the Gallowgate and behind the goal. This is something we massively support as a group and want to see implemented long term.
The results show that people feel that the atmosphere has declined, particularly in the Gallowgate. We appreciate the season we’ve had plays a part, but we believe that should not be an excuse on the whole.
Only ourselves and Fulham do not having standing behind the goal in the league. And this is still something in the long run we want to see fixed. Whether we stay at SJP or not.
We understand the complexities with moving seats, and from those that answered the survey, 43.4% said the club should move people from their seats, 34.1% said they shouldn’t, and 22.5% said don’t know.
We support the introduction of the section in Level 7 and hope it becomes a massive success, but we need to fix the situation pitchside too.
We all have a responsibility for the atmosphere and it is a far cry from what it was. We firmly believe it can be again.
It’s positive that discussions with the club took place and we thank them for setting that up alongside other supporter groups, and we look forward to future conversations on this issue.
A new safe standing section will be introduced on Level 7 at St. James' Park this summer.
Affected season ticket holders have the option to move to alternative seats and supporters can also move into the new section during the seat move window, subject to availability.
