I've always felt that this was a nonsense protocol. As long as the pitcher keeps his entire arsenal at his disposal, why shouldn't the batter have his? Why allow an opponent to make history on the batter's watch? Now, if the pitcher will only throw a fastball, then swing away.

Fantastic player, person, teammate, and a wonderful ambassador for baseball. It is still way too long a contract and way too much money. Look at it this way, in 6 years you're hoping to get close to 1000 games out of a body playing at an elite level. That really takes its toll.
