Summary: Prediction and structural processing have dissociable influences on reading behavior. LLMs are a good model of when our eyes move forward, but can’t explain when, where, or why humans reread. To model rereading, we need models that go beyond next-word prediction. (12/n)

If this happened to an American student who wrote an op-ed while on Fulbright in Turkey, it would be an international incident. Congresspeople would demand the student be returned w/in the hour. Their intellectual, professional, political, & personal integrity would be defended

New preprint! How can we test hypotheses about learning that rely on exposure to large amounts of data? No babies no problem: Use language models as models of learning 🎯targeted modifications 🎯 of language models’ training corpora!

I’m presenting today at #NAACL24 on our @GoogleAI / @GoogleDeepMind paper “The Impact of Depth in Compositional Generalization in Transformer Language Models” If you can’t make it, here’s a thread on what we found! paper, poster, slides, & video at jpetty.org/depth

Are you coming to #NAACL24? 🇲🇽 DM if you wanna meet up, grab coffee, and/or talk about - predicting model generalization behavior - state tracking - using pure math to reason about language models - formal languages and LLMs
