Great article by ⁦@maxseddon⁩ ⁦@xtophercook⁩ on the leaked Russian documents (the 4th in a series), this time about how Russia prepares for simultaneous/opportunistic attacks on the ROK and Japan when planning a surprise attack on NATO. ft.com/content/d345a6e7-2d72…

We got a look at some potential Russian strike targets in Japan and South Korea in the event a conflict with NATO leads to “horizontal escalation.” There are lots of civilian targets –including nuclear power plants. And a gif! with ⁦@xtophercookon.ft.com/3W2Zi7V

update! something is happening with Russian forces in Syria! heavy lifters have turned up at Hmeimim, S-400 launchers have been packed up at the base, things on the move. Not clear if this is withdrawal or sending surpluses home, but big move of materiel. ft.com/content/1758cb11-c14e…

Strikingly little movement at both places: planes standing about for 24hrs at Khmeimim. No movement of kit on quays at Tartus. The warships are outside port - but loitering nearby outside range of a rogue mortar. But - above all - the air traffic just isn't there for an evac.

An unfortunate update to this story: The office of the prosecutor-general of Ukraine said on Sunday evening that the body of a UK citizen had been recovered from the debris of the hotel. I understand this person was a Reuters security advisor. Awful news. Thoughts with his family and colleagues. on.ft.com/4czIKKg

Thoughts and solidarity with our @Reuters colleagues today. A member of a Reuters news team was missing and two others were injured and hospitalized after a Russian missile attack on their hotel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. ft.com/content/e0856a97-6e56…

1/ This is of course an interesting article and while those deep into the subject matter might not be surprised by much, others might get an eye opener. And this is from '08 - '14. These two maps show possible Baltic- and Northern Fleet nuclear targets. A number in Norway

New: @xtophercook and I report on maps of Russian targets for high-precision strikes in a potential conflict with Nato. The missiles are all nuclear-capable. Targets across Europe and beyond would be at risk as soon as Russia engaged with Nato forces. ft.com/content/237e1e55-401d…

I hope decision-makers in Germany take a close look at these maps. Germany won't be targeted because of medium-range weapons deployed on its territory; it's always been a Russian target. The sooner we accept this, the sooner we can discuss appropriate policy solutions. 2/2

New reporting by @maxseddon and @xtophercook on Russia's long-range strike capabilities and doctrine reveals a pre-targeted set of facilities across Europe, including Norway and Germany, which could be engaged in times of war. Note that these maps date from 2008-2014. 1/2

The leaked documents also indicate that Russia has the capability to carry tactical nuclear weapons on surface ships despite a 1991 deal with the US to remove them. Russia rehearsed this in June – but the documents indicate they have been doing this for much longer.
