In the world's most corrupt state, Somalia, there are no genuinely independent or legitimate sports institutions. Yet a football team claiming to represent the entire country continues to participate in CAF competitions. In practice, players selected for this so-called national team are often drawn overwhelmingly from Mogadishu, with much of the rest of the country effectively excluded from the process. A similar pattern can be observed in the selection of athletes representing Somalia at the Olympic Games. Despite longstanding concerns over governance, transparency, and inclusivity, neither CAF, FIFA, nor the IOC appears willing to subject these arrangements to meaningful scrutiny or oversight. Meanwhile, for Somaliland's 6.5 million people, the right to participate in regional, continental, and international sporting competitions continues to be denied for a 35th consecutive year. While Somalia retains international sporting recognition despite its institutional shortcomings, Somaliland's athletes remain excluded largely because of political considerations rather than sporting merit.

Al-Shabaab has long regarded football as a sinful activity, banning the sport in territories under its control and punishing those who defied its edicts. The group even even bombed a crowd watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup final in Kampala, killing 79 people and injuring dozens more. Yet today, the same organization has condemned the US for denying entry to Somalian FIFA referee Artan.

Hillary Clinton, 13 years ago you rushed to give Somalia’s failed government illegal legitimacy — and the entire Horn of Africa has been paying the price in blood and chaos ever since. Now you’re suddenly crying about “international exchange” ?🤷🏽‍♀️ Spare us the lectures, Madam.
As a World Cup host, the U.S. shouldn't be flippantly barring officials from entering the country to do their jobs. It's terribly backward. It's also counterproductive. Global sports competitions should improve international exchange and relations, not the reverse.

Now that the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reports that Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro is expected to visit Israel next week, Somalilanders can sit back and enjoy the familiar spectacle of the Saudi-Turkish-Qatari-Egyptian axis scrambling to draft yet another round of condemnations, denunciations, objections, concerns, and expressions of "deep disappointment." One can almost picture the emergency meetings already underway; diplomats frantically searching for the strongest possible wording, foreign ministries dusting off old templates, and television presenters preparing dramatic monologues about the "grave threat" posed by Somaliland simply talking to a country that half the world already engages with. The irony, of course, is that these same governments maintain direct or indirect relations with Israel whenever it suits their strategic interests. Yet when Somaliland pursues its own diplomatic and economic interests, suddenly the sky is falling and regional stability is allegedly at risk. For Somalilanders, the condemnations have become less of a deterrent and more of a ceremonial tradition. Every new diplomatic breakthrough is inevitably followed by a chorus of outrage from capitals that seem far more concerned about Somaliland's growing international profile than about the countless crises unfolding in their own countries and neighborhoods. At this point, the real question is not whether another condemnation is coming, but which entity will issue it first.Amusing

🚨Civilians have begun fleeing Hawlwadag district in Mogadishu, Somalia, following intense clashes that erupted on Wednesday afternoon between pro-opposition forces and troops loyal to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud whose term ended last month. The fighting broke out in several parts of Hawlwadag, including areas along Maka al-Mukarama Road, one of the capital’s busiest commercial corridors. Witnesses said heavy gunfire and explosions forced residents to abandon their homes. The clashes come amid heightened political and security tensions in Mogadishu.

The event, jointly chaired by former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe and #Finland's Deputy Ambassador Leo Svahnback, convened the National Oversight Committee for Africa Trade and TradeMark Africa leadership. It brought together senior government officials, including #Ethiopia's Minister of Transport, development partners, and various African leaders to discuss continental economic cooperation. During the summit, Minister Abdilahi emphasized Somaliland's dedication to regional trade integration, viewing it as a vital engine for economic resilience, peace, and job creation. He detailed #Somaliland's significant infrastructure investments, most notably the modernization and expansion of the Berbera Port. Additionally, he highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at digitizing customs systems, streamlining supply chain operations, and enhancing the overall competitiveness of regional trade corridors to facilitate the seamless movement of goods. The broader discussions at the summit centered on the role of trade in large-scale job creation and how global events impact African commerce, with participants exploring ways to mitigate non-tariff barriers, reduce costs, and harmonize regional policies. Concluding his address, Minister Abdilahi reaffirmed his government's commitment to private sector-led development and called for strengthened collaboration between African nations and international development partners to unlock new investment opportunities and ensure sustainable economic growth across the continent.
