On the eve of the SpaceX IPO, I wanted to share a few mementos from, and in remembrance of, my friend Phil Le —RIP 2020 who was a missions lead and Starship vehicle lead at SpaceX.
Exactly 10 years ago, almost to the day, summer 2016, after we made Pokevision, I went to LA for the first time and he showed me around SpaceX where the energy was electrifying. He would show me around his desk and introduce me to a few folks and I got to meet
@elonmusk for the first time for a brief moment.
Phil and I would later go out for dinner and he would talk hours and hours about the mission at SpaceX and the goal to surpass every nation/entity in launches per year (they would later achieve this by mid-2027)
Having grown up in Michigan and gone to school there (Phil was my freshman dorm hall neighbor), it was rare to see a “mission” of such grandiose ambitions and thus, it widened my perspective greatly.
This would be the last time Phil and I met in person, as he went on to be involved in 30 more launches during one of SpaceX’s most critical periods. But during this time, he would send me cool tokens from his missions such as the patches below.
While I know nothing about rockets back then, and know equally little today, I just simply wanted to remember a good man and a great friend who really believed he was there to make history, and today is a symbolic event recognizing his work.
Rest in peace good sir.
