Preity Zinta was actually shooting Dil Se.. at the time, and then at night she would come and shoot the Liril film.
When Usha Bhandarkar, who was the creative head on the job, asked me to make the film, I said, “Look, I’m very scared of water, so I’m not going to go and shoot in a real waterfall. I’ll build a waterfall.”
So, we built the waterfall at Mehboob Studio, with Barun Mukherjee lighting it, Indrani Pillai as the Production Designer and Art Director, and Shivananda R. Moily handling the water pumps.
We created what felt like a tropical haven, and the waterfall, of course, could be turned on and off. Not with one switch, but through a system of pumps and recirculated water that made the entire setup possible.
The feeling of the film was captured because of Preity’s zest. She brought a certain free spiritedness to the film.
And, of course, my thanks to the entire team whose hard work and collaboration made the film possible.
