"Over 90% of new renewable projects are now cheaper than fossil alternatives. Gas-fired power is now 3x to 4x more expensive than solar and wind." In @StandardKenya, @350's Rukiya Khamis argues that Africa must stop betting on fossil fuels. High prices and supply shocks are pushing communities to the brink, yet billions are still funneled into projects like EACOP. As the world shifts to renewable energy,we engaged #EACOP affected communities from district of #Lwengo to understand the kind of energy they would want to use in their communities & energy issues they are facing. They demand energy rooted in public ownership & community control.

The right to education may be guaranteed by law, but that doesn't mean it's guaranteed in practice. Severe injustices such as forced labor and marriage, disruptions to education due to conflict or criminal prosecution, race and ethnicity-based discrimination, and unsafe learning environments all keep learners out of school. That's where legal empowerment comes in. Community paralegals can help learners know and use the law to demand fulfillment of their rights to education. Hundreds of justice defenders connected online last week for the second Grassroots Justice Network Academy Leadership Program foundational session, where they learned the 5 steps communities can take to tackle injustice: 1ļøāƒ£ Come together 2ļøāƒ£ Understand an injustice and set a goal 3ļøāƒ£ Analyze power and analyze law 4ļøāƒ£ Take action 5ļøāƒ£ Refresh and take action again Catalina Marino, Program Manager at @ACIJ, provided an example of each of these steps by talking about her work supporting informal settlement communities in Argentina to protect their homes and neighborhoods from environmental pollution. šŸŽ§ Listen to Catalina's story on the 'A Common Pot' podcast: - English: shorturl.at/eqwD3 - Spanish: shorturl.at/GifOJ The session ended with participants sharing similar experiences and encouraging each other to not give up the fight. They also asked great questions, like how to protect vulnerable justice seekers from retaliation, engage communities who have lost trust in justice institutions, and measure the success of legal empowerment initiatives—all of which will be answered as the program progresses over the next three months. Remember: the Leadership Program is just the beginning of the Academy. Join the Network to receive info on future offerings: grassrootsjusticenetwork.org… #PowerofLearning #GrassrootsJustice

Even when legislation exists to protect women’s rights, cultural and social norms continue to drive discrimination. Legal empowerment can shift these norms by: 🟣 helping women negotiate more equitable roles in the home 🟣 supporting communities to align traditional practices with cultural and human rights 🟣 enabling women to mobilize together to advance systemic change. Nearly half of the world’s 12.4 million refugee children are out of school. A new @GEMReport, @GlobalNamati, and Grassroots Justice Network paper shows how displacement, statelessness, discrimination ,and weak access to justice continue to block education. #LearnForJustice: bit.ly/2026justice-report #PowerOfLearning

Last Thursday was the third foundational session in the Grassroots Justice Network Academy Leadership Program. More than 300 justice defenders tuned in live to learn how to make the legal empowerment cycle (know law, use law, shape law) ā€œturnā€ over time. At the beginning of the session, participants placed one word in the chat to describe the current system of laws and government—and the results were bleak. After discussing how to change those systems so that they are just, fair, and actually serving their citizens, though, the mood shifted. This shift was largely because of @NamatiKenya’s Aisha Khagai’s inspiring presentation on how community paralegals in Kenya walk with communities to secure identity documents. Her strong message that learning and leadership can fuel a movement resonated with many of the other practitioners on the call. Court update! Today 10 environmental defenders who were arrested in April 2025 & later released on bail appeared in court. It’s unfortunate that even today their case was not heard due to absence of state prosecutor. The defenders a still strong to challenge climate injustices.

Engaging students on their human and land rights is key to protect their livelihoods. Uganda’s population is dominated by young people and #legalEmpowerment empowerment is key to stop human & land injustices that is increasing in Uga. We prioritize legal empowerment in our work.

Communities affected by #EACOP sharing energy they are using. They continue to depend on dirty fuels including paraffin, candles ,charcoal among others. Few of them use solar for lighting & charging phones. They say electricity is expensive & request for subsidized solar products.
