Columbia had justified keeping test-optional with an unpublished study concluding that the policy "did not lead to a diminishment of the academic performance of admitted classes or the academic success of enrolled students"—sureeee!
GPA-wise, non-submitters as a group correspond to the bottom 3% of the submitter distribution.

Average SAT by major at Columbia.
Classics improbably edges out Math and Physics for the top spot at 1529. Sociology is on the bottom (1422), though "Ethnicity & Race Studies", "Public Health", and "Human Rights" aren't too far in front.
The within-school spread is 100 points or so — around half of a standard deviation of the SAT-taker population.

The sheer demographic ignorance of contemporary Americans really holds them back from understanding like any political issues.
When YouGov asked people to estimate percent of the US belonged different to demographic categories, the average respondent put the US at 30% Jewish, 21% transgender, and 41% black.
If that's your model of the world, why *would* you care that the Ivies are 10% white male?

I've seen a lot of libertarians of a certain stripe advocate adding economics to the "common core" in the hopes of it getting us better political outcomes. I wouldn't be surprised if a semester of demography were more effective in that regard.
