5 years ago, the State of Hawaii arrested Indigenous elders blocking construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope at Mauna Kea. The pain & pride I felt that day replays over & over again. Generations of Kānaka Maoli have prevented desecration & destruction of our sacred mountain.

The photo depicts numerous Indigenous elders (kūpuna) in the middle of Mauna Kea Access Road, seated with blankets in the early morning, with their supporters holding signs to block construction crews from ascending to the northern plateau of Mauna Kea to construct the Thirty Meter Telescope.
