In 1968, 12 American pilots involved in Operation Rolling Thunder were downed in North Vietnam. Two East German filmmakers interviewed ten of them for a four-hour-long documentary about the US war machine. My latest Flashback (@InRO) is Pilots in Pajamas: inreviewonline.com/2026/03/3…

Very excited to announce that I’ve programmed @wangontheweb’s exciting new A. Rimbaud at Catskill, NY’s Community Theater. We’ll play the film on June 13 at 6:30, and I’ll moderate a Q&A with Patrick right after. If you live upstate, don’t miss this. Tix in next tweet.

Great series. If you can only go to one, make it Kim Ki-young’s Ieodo.

Great movie. It’s time the international film community recognizes that Burkinabé cinema is some of the best in the world.
Cannes Classics 2026 to screen 4K restoration of Idrissa Ouédraogo's "Tilaï" A new 4K restoration of Burkinabé filmmaker Idrissa Ouédraogo's most recognized work, "Tilaï" (1990), is set to screen as a Cannes Classics 2026 selection. The restoration was made from the original negative. Digital and photochemical work was carried out at the Cité de Mémoire laboratory under the supervision of Denis Garcia and Silvia Voser, on behalf of the Institut français – Cinémathèque Afrique. Waka Films is presenting the restored version. The screening will take place in the presence of Nora Ouédraogo, the late director's daughter, and producer Silvia Voser. Cannes Classics 2026 includes 21 feature films, 3 short films, and 6 documentaries, alongside two contemporary works. The 79th Festival de Cannes runs May 12 to 23, 2026. Watch a trailer for the restored film. #Tilaï #CannesClassics #IdrissaOuedraogo #AfricanCinema

Aido (dir. Susumu Hani, 1969): Hani asked “what if I had sex with the concept of sex itself” and made it look like this. A pleasantly confounding entry for the Necessary Sex Scene Discourse and one of the best movies of the Japanese New Wave. Glad it’s finally “available.”

Love when a masterpiece is based on a book I can knock out in a single morning. This Topo Chico flavor is nice, too.
The Girl with the Golden Eyes (dir. Jean-Gabriel Albicocco, 1961): you know how these four-screenshot posts can oversell a not-so-great movie? Every single frame of this movie looks like these:

After learning this was entirely shot in Griffith Park, I’m always distracted by how distinctly Californian the trees look here
can’t stop thinking about this clip of the advance through the forest in Vidor’s The Big Parade, where unbeknownst to the heroes, their comrades are silently dropping in the background

I wrote about Sho Miyake’s latest, one of the best films of the year, which opens today. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie so simple & beautiful, one that elicits big reactions despite its small stakes. Deserves all those Ozu comparisons and more. Read here:
Miyake Shō’s TWO SEASONS, TWO STRANGERS, writes @zwlws, captures its characters in the realm of the ineffable, making the mundane utterly sublime. Opening tomorrow @Metrograph. slantmagazine.com/film/two-s…
