“The sticking point for us is that there’s been no negotiation over this. They presented it as a take it or leave it offer.” This is not how you implement a successful 4-day week. You need buy-in from staff. You need their input to make sure it works for everyone. We’ve helped 100s of organisations to make the switch and we can promise you that a top-down enforcement of terms is not the way to go. TfL need to meet with the unions and negotiate this properly.

The tube strikes called off yesterday essentially boil down to one question: how do you properly define a four-day working week? The trade union ASLEF says the proposed introduction of a four-day week on the Tube “will be the biggest improvement in working conditions for Underground train drivers in decades.” But the RMT says this is a “fake four-day week” that amounts to five days’ work compressed into four. While the true nature of TFL’s four-day week offer is up for debate, one thing isn’t: a four-day week is no longer a fantasy. It has become a live national question - and organised labour will help us get there. Every union that takes action to secure a shorter working week brings the four-day week closer to reality for everyone.
