A Brazilian coffee farmer earns about 7 dollars for one kilogram of green coffee beans. After roasting, blending, and branding, that same coffee retails in the United States for around 20 to 25 dollars per kilogram in a Lavazza tin. Italy does not produce a single coffee bean. Not one coffee tree grows on Italian soil. Italy imports about 240,000 tonnes of Brazilian coffee every year, more than from any other country. Brazil is the largest single origin in nearly every famous Italian espresso blend. Lavazza Crema e Gusto is Brazilian Arabica with African and Indonesian Robusta. Their Qualità Rossa blend uses Brazilian Arabica with African Robusta. Illy's classic blend of 9 Arabicas is anchored by Brazilian beans. Segafredo even operates a coffee plantation and processing plant inside Brazil to handle its own green beans. Italy is now the second-largest roasted coffee exporter on Earth, with nearly 2.9 billion dollars in coffee exports in 2024. That entire export industry runs on beans that were never Italian. The Brazilian farmer captures roughly 10 percent of the final retail price of a bag of Italian-branded coffee. The Italian roaster, distributor, and brand capture the other 90 percent. The Italian coffee identity is one of the most successful branding operations in the history of global commerce. It was built on a supply chain that runs through Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and the Cerrado. The next time you pay a premium for Italian coffee, remember that no country supplies more of those beans than Brazil.

One mine in northern Brazil produces the highest-grade iron ore in the world. It sits in the Carajás Mountains, in the state of Pará. Production started in 1985. The ore comes out of the ground at 65 to 67 percent pure iron. That is the highest content of any major iron ore mine on the planet. The reserves still in the ground hold more than 7 billion tons. The Northern System produced 177 million tons in 2024. Vale's total iron ore output reached 336 million tons in 2025, the highest in seven years, overtaking Rio Tinto's Pilbara for the first time. Vale built a private railroad to carry the ore out, called Estrada de Ferro Carajás. The line runs 892 kilometers from the mine to the coast. The trains on this line are among the longest in regular service anywhere. They stretch up to 3.5 kilometers and pull 330 wagons. Each train carries 40,000 tons of iron in a single trip. The line ends at Ponta da Madeira, a port in São Luís, Maranhão. Ponta da Madeira moved 190 million tons of cargo in 2020. That makes it the largest cargo port in Brazil. The port can receive Valemax ships, the largest ore carriers ever built, at 400,000 tons of capacity each. Vale owns the mine, the railroad, and the port. In 2025, Vale shipped 198 million tons of iron ore to China. China is the single largest customer in the global iron ore market. Vale committed another 70 billion reais to expand the corridor through 2030, under the New Carajás Program announced in February 2025. The plan adds 20 million tons of annual iron ore capacity and lifts copper output by 32 percent. That makes Carajás the single largest source of high-grade iron ore feeding the largest steel producer in human history.

💎 LULA QUER INSISTIR EM NOVA INDICAÇÃO DE MESSIAS AO STF No dia 29/4 o Senado Federal reprovou a indicação de Jorge Messias para o STF por 42 votos a 34, impondo uma derrota histórica a Lula. Mas Lula não aceitou a derrota. Lula disse a aliados que quer indicar novamente Messias ao Senado e fará a indicação antes das eleições de outubro. Messias, por sua vez, só aceitará a nova indicação com certeza de que será aprovado, pois já amargou o vexame da primeira derrota. Nesse contexto o que daria a certeza de que Messias poderia ser aprovado na segunda indicação? Que tipo de “negociação”poderia fazer os Senadores da República que votaram contra Messias passarem a votar a favor de Messias? Trata-se do mesmo candidato com a mesma FALTA de notório saber jurídico…e EXCESSO de amizade e conluio pessoal com Lula. Existe ainda um entrave jurídico, o Ato da Mesa do Senado, publicado em 2010, que regulamenta o regimento interno da casa no que tange a escolhas de autoridades e prevê no art. 5º, que “é vedada apreciação, na mesma sessão legislativa, de indicação de autoridade rejeitada pelo Senado Federal.” Isso significa que o presidente Lula só poderá indicar Messias no ano que vem…. O editorial do Estado de São Paulo “O perfil que o STF exige” de 17/5 elencou cinco características fundamentais para um ministro do STF, com as quais concordo: 1) saber jurídico amplamente reconhecido, 2) independência em relação ao governo, 3) discrição institucional, 4) respeito aos limites da corte, 5) ausência de militância político-partidária. Messias evidentemente não cumpre os requisitos acima elencados, dada a sua história e trajetória. Eu adicionaria uma sexta característica que é o compromisso claro com a imparcialidade que requer necessariamente a ausência de conflitos de interesses nas causas que julgará. Assim, o novo ministro deverá ter o compromisso de não julgar causas de seus parentes ou utilizar do cargo para realizar tráfico de influência na Corte, problema que sói ocorrer nos dias de hoje.
