How did West Cork not have a rain alert this morning @MetEireann? Roads flooded, almost impassable @CorkSafetyAlert. Water pouring from saturated fields, carrying precious soil downstream. @IFAmedia @opwireland Restore hedgerows and plant trees on hills to alleviate flooding.

I see now that a @MetEireann warning was posted at 9.11 am, ten minutes after I’d checked the forecast.

Senior county camogie stars once again treated with disrespect. Committed elite athletes having to change in tiny changing rooms, no hot water for showers afterwards, no dinner after a match. #EqualityInSport @KilkennyCamogie @OfficialCamogie @KilkennyCLG @officialgaa @RTEsport
Today, the Kilkenny and Dublin camogie players wore shorts in protest. This isn’t about fashion. It’s not about tradition. It’s about athletes being forced to sacrifice comfort, performance and even dignity, for an outdated rule written without them in mind.

Last day for this year’s @BirdWatchIE Irish Garden Bird Survey, sponsored by @Ballymaloe. Biodiversity loss happening before our eyes - no Greenfinch, very few Goldfinch, Chaffinch Yellowhammers. Surrounded by dairy desert, so not surprising. #ecocide #WestCork #NatureIsHome💚

Rainwater pouring off the fields. Taking top soil and slurry with it. Polluting streams and rivers, damaging roads, causing flooding downstream. This is where hedgerows should be allowed to grow, trees should be planted. Allow wet land and flood plains to do their job. #WestCork

Water overflowing from a blocked drain combined with a field left bare overwinter after onion harvest = appalling loss of top soil silted water downstream. Healthy soil and clean water are essential to life. Farmland needs regeneration, not overproduction poisoning. #WestCork

Poisonous products used on pets are contributing to nestling mortality. Stop using these dangerous chemicals. There are natural alternatives.
Pet owners accidentally poisoning garden birds! Our latest research finds pet flea treatments (fipronil and imidacloprid) in 100% of blue tit and great tit nests, with nestling mortality higher in the more contaminated nest. @SongBirdSBS @SussexUni @CannelleTassin

Love is definitely a pointy nose kiss. Thank you, Emma and team @GalwaySPCA for connecting us back in 2018. He was a bit #littler then! So many sighthounds are in rescue centres looking for homes. They make the most wonderful companions. #AdoptDontShop #HappyNewYear
Love is a pointy nose kiss. If you are adopting please consider a Greyhound or Lurcher. Many wait patiently for someone to fall in love with them. If you've never considered a "pointy nose" just ask. We'll share what wonderful, easy, gentle, affectionate & chilled dogs they are.

#Ecocide happening on our watch. No Yellowhammers visiting our bird feeders this winter. Previously we’ve had up to twelve. Sadly my prediction of 2021 came true - dairy desert, removal of over-winter stubble have decimated this #WestCork Yellowhammer population. @MichealMartinTD
Replying to @IrishRainforest
So worried as the land round us is for sale. Five or so breeding pairs of #Yellowhammers use the Furze ‘scrub’ on the field boundaries. If this is obliterated by new owners, and the over-winter stubble planted with perennial ryegrass, that’ll be the end of our Yellowhammers.

Already very windy in #WestCork. Need to separate Cork county into east and west for weather warnings. The western seaboard northwards from Kerry has a yellow warning in place for later today. Looks like West Cork has an amazing wind break on the @MetEireann map!
A very windy day ahead today Thursday with heavy rain moving across the country and some strong gusts but worst of it clearing by early evening. The potential storm for Friday night into Saturday does look likely to track further North now and impact Ireland more but the details still a little uncertain across the models. Likely warnings will be issued later so keep up to date. At present it looks very wet Friday and then strong gusts Friday night into Saturday but bright spells developing with nice settled weather developing from Sunday.
