The approach was inductive, working on a range of data sources:
- Interaction logs
- Think-aloud protocols
- Finished essays (completed collaboratively with AI)
30-minute L1 semi-structured interviews, transcribed, translated, then coded

Having noted that peer collaborative writing has been consistently shown to result in a range of positive outcomes, the authors were keen to see if those same outcomes would result in human-AI interaction.
