#MostEndangeredRivers: The Passaic River has always been a vital resource, supporting livelihoods and economic growth. But it has also been badly contaminated by the chemical manufacturing industry. Join American Rivers and @AmaEarthGroup in calling on the @EPA to maintain its commitment to the people of New Jersey and ensure that the cleanup of the Passaic River maintains a top priority to ensure access to clean drinking water for generations to come. 🔗 Take action: mostendangeredrivers.org/riv…

4/ @amaearthgroup (gap.karmahq.xyz/project/ama-…) ~ The team has finalized planning and secured funding for a conservation project slated for November 2024 to February 2025, targeting habitat restoration and environmental protection for endangered Leatherback turtles. The project will address critical threats by removing large debris from nesting beaches, restoring coastal dunes, and implementing data-driven approaches to improve turtle nesting success and coastal resilience. Specifically, tree trunks and other obstructions will be cleared from nesting sites by late January, allowing safer, more accessible nesting grounds. Coastal dune restoration in February and March will involve replanting native vegetation to strengthen natural barriers against erosion, benefiting both turtles and the ecosystem. A robust data collection and analysis plan, including drone imagery and water quality monitoring, will enable the team to identify debris hotspots, assess dune erosion, and monitor environmental conditions to guide targeted interventions. Additionally, in November, project leaders will meet with Puerto Rico’s municipal and environmental authorities (DRNA) to discuss sustainable dredging practices, critical to long-term habitat preservation. The project is vital for the Leatherback turtle population, a keystone species supporting marine ecosystem health through its role in maintaining seagrass beds and coral reefs, essential for various marine species. Geospatial data, processed through advanced ETL pipelines, will enhance project oversight, track changes in dune topography, and ensure effective, sustainable outcomes. Full project details are available here (docs.google.com/document/d/1…).

4/ @amaearthgroup (gap.karmahq.xyz/project/ama-…) ~ Ama Earth Group recently completed a native plant restoration project along the Passaic River, working alongside local conservation groups and community volunteers. The initiative focused on reintroducing native vegetation to the riverbanks to boost biodiversity and enhance the river's ecosystem. By planting various native species, the project aims to combat invasive plants, reduce soil toxins, and create critical habitats for wildlife, contributing to a more resilient ecosystem that can better adapt to environmental changes. Known as one of the most polluted rivers in the United States, the Passaic River is a crucial yet vulnerable resource. This restoration effort is part of a larger movement to restore the river to its healthiest state. While past initiatives primarily targeted invasive species removal, this latest project strategically planted 30 native species in two layers: Broadleaf Cattail and Softstem Bulrush to prevent erosion and purify the soil and water, and Swamp Rose Mallow and Lakebank Sedge to attract pollinators and enhance water filtration. In addition to planting, the team removed over 1,000 pieces of litter from the riverbank and engaged the community through educational activities that highlighted the river's history and its ongoing challenges. Ama Earth Group's mission is to promote hyper-local environmental stewardship, encouraging community involvement for lasting, global ecological impact.

Thanks Great Spirit for allowing us to complete another community-led restoration project for the Pahsayèk River in New Jersey (traditional land of the Lenni-Lenape) 🌱 This is one of the most polluted rivers in the United States, however, we are part of a growing movement to restore and nurse this beautiful river back to optimal health ♻️ Our past few efforts for this river consisted of mostly invasive species removal. This time we did some maintenance, but we mostly focused on planting 30 native plants to help restore the native vegetation along the riverbank. We chose each plant strategically and split them into 2 layers. Layer 1 consisted of Broadleaf Cattail & Softstem Bulrush, plants that are experts at competing with invasive species, preventing erosion and purifying soil & water content. Layer 2 consisted of Secondary Support Species like Swamp Rose Mallow & Lakebank Sedge, plants that attract pollinators and improve water filtration 🌊 We also removed 1,000 pieces of litter from the riverbank and helped educate the community about the history and state of the river 🤞🏽 Thanks to everyone who came out to volunteer, to our subscribers & donors that made this project possible, and to the community leaders who gave us the blessing to go forth. Finally, thanks to @gitcoin @climate_program for the quadratic funds & thanks @keller.photographe for the incredible photos! 📸

We invite you to join us for another Pahsayék River restoration event, this time in honor of Climate Week NYC 🌊 We’ll be removing invasive plants that are choking out the local habitat & planting native plants to help bring back the area’s native vegetation 🌻 This is arguably the most sacred & crucial body of water in the state of New Jersey, yet it’s also one of the most polluted bodies of water in the country ⚠️ Join us to add another brick to the growing effort being made to restore this river to good health ☀️ DM or comment if you’re interested in attending! #PassaicRiver #NJ #Newark #Rivers
