We've made some predictions for the CME(s) observed at Solar Orbiter on 18th March! We should be seeing them arrive at Earth later this evening, all the way into tomorrow. And look at that Southwards magnetic field 👀 We're expecting a double-dip geomagnetic storm, so auroras! 🌞
This is our magnetic field prediction for the L1 solar wind (2nd panel), based on Solar Orbiter data, compared to the current observations: @SolarOrbiterMAG magnetic field in panel 1, @NWSSWPC L1 solar wind magnetic field in panel 3, L1 speed panel 4, L1 temperature panel 5.

The sun put on a great show today. These massive prominences are many times larger than Earth, illustrating how the sun's powerful magnetic field shapes the incredible solar atmosphere.

@Harriet__Turner* has quantified the solar wind forecasting gains we should expect from data assimilation (DA) of L5 in situ observations. DA even beats corotation forecasts (which are for a single point in the heliosphere and so can't be used to simulate CME transit).
ALT Plot of the forecast error against forecast lead time. Without data assimilation, the values are around 105 km/s. Assimilating L1 observations reduces the error to around 60 km/s. Assimilating L1 and L5 observations reduces the error to around 55 km/s, and to <50 km/s for the first 5 days lead time. Dashed lines show real-time data, while solid lines show processed science data, which are not available until long after the observations are made. The skill of the DA method is largely unchanged.
