“The Flamingo Revolution”: Trump’s family has angered Albania
Mass protests have been ongoing in Albania for more than two weeks against a planned $5 billion luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
The complex is set to be built near the Vjosa-Narta protected area and Sazan Island, home to sea turtles, seals, and thousands of flamingos.
Environmentalists warn that the project could destroy hundreds of hectares of unique natural habitat.
After preparatory work began and fences were installed, the protests escalated into clashes with police.
Demonstrators have taken to the streets with slogans such as “Albania is not for sale” and are demanding that the project be scrapped entirely.
Despite the pressure, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has backed the development, calling it important for the country’s economy.
The European Commission has demanded that the construction comply with EU environmental standards.
It is worth noting that Albania is one of the most pro-American countries in Europe.
