If we want to fix English local government, then we need to sort out both the finances and the geography of councils. Our new briefing shows how to get it done by the end of the Parliament, and it all depends on a new map for English local government that looks like this:

There are 112 cities in the G7 bigger than Nottingham - but of the bottom 20 for productivity, 7 are British. We can catch up with the rest of the G7, and become richer than Germany, but only if we fix this problem.

The slow NHS-ification of the state is really quite striking As @wesstreeting recently said (based on Ben's and my work on the NHS workforce plan) "I like Amanda Pritchard (NHS chief executive) very much, but we’re in danger of making her Louis the 14th – ā€˜l’etat, c’est moi."

As a result, health continues to account for a growing fraction of overall public service spending: around 40% now, and on track to reach 45% by 2028. That compares to 32% in 2010 and 26% in 2000.

As the centralised state struggles to deliver the most basic infrastructure, it’s time for our great cities to take on the linked challenges of growth, net zero, and inequality. The #ukurbanfutures report launched on Thursday will set out how it’s done.
Two days before we launch #ukurbanfutures report in #Sheffield...we've had a sneak peak and it's looking good. Our big impressions are optimism about our cities' future potential and their capacity to come up with solutions and partnerships. @theRSAorg @GandonAmy @ICClimited

All the focus on HS2 is on what happens next rather than the last 10 years. Whatever decision is made there are serious questions about the competence of the British state and successive administrations that a 330 mile high-speed train line has proven (apparently) impossible.
