Young coaches, I’m a nobody and you shouldn’t listen to me, but here are some things I had in my phone notes from December of 2021. Like my guy
@SwagnShades says hope this helps
.Pristine lineup card (correct jersey numbers, positions, bullpen, subs, is it taped up nicely where everybody can see it or does it look like you don’t give a shit
.Lineup construction (is it built to maximize runs, utilize matchups, reward QAB leaders, get slumping guys going)
.Pitching rotation (bullpen management, tournament format, pitchers primary position and necessary rest etc)
.Is everybody prepared? (Have a few extra belts, hats, or helmets just in case teenagers end up being teenagers)
.Does my teams dynamic warmup and catch play look ready to win the first inning?
.Is my fungo game sharp? Have I given every infielder an at em routine ball, glove side one hand lane, backhand push through, do or die pro move before game action? Have the outfielders moved around enough for their legs, eyes, and arms to be game ready?
.Am I calling the most efficient pitch sequence to get outs in three pitches or less?
.Am I running in the most successful running counts and do my green light guys understand what those counts are?
.Am I making properly timed mound visits, delivering the right message, making the move to the bullpen at the appropriate time?
.Am I making the right 1st to 3rd wave ons, making good reads to waving guys home? Etc
.Am I giving the best cues to hitters in between pitches to set their minds at ease?
.Is my bench engaged, are they being the best possible teammates?
.Am I being respectful to the umpires while I’m questioning a call and defending my players?
.Are we showing the energy we need to win however many games we have today?
.Are we showing tough enough body language to respond immediately if we’re punched in the face early?
.If a coach on a staff that I’d want to coach for was watching this game would he think our team is well coached?
