ALT A team from BCM Neurosurgery and the University of Utah Neurosurgery seek to explain the role the brain's default mode network plays in creative thinking.
ALT Q: What are your interests or hobbies outside of neurosurgery? A: I love playing and watching pretty much any sport. I play a lot of pickleball, volleyball, frisbee, soccer, basketball, etc. I’m a big Manchester United and Phoenix Suns fan. I also like cooking a lot — Thai food is my specialty.
ALT Q: What advice would you give to med students thinking about applying to neurosurgery residency programs? A: Try to be as involved as you can early on. Say “yes” to things, learn your limits and then go from there. At the same time, treat every rotation like you want to do that specialty. Lastly, make the most of it. It’s a lot to take in, but you’re there for a reason. Might as well give it your all.

ALT Q: When did you know you wanted to be a neurosurgeon? A: The first time was in 7th grade, but you don’t really know until you get to med school and start doing stuff. But by the second year of med school, I was confident I wanted to take this route.
ALT Q: What are you looking forward to over the next seven years? A: I’m looking forward to having my own autonomy in patient care, and feeling like I’m really contributing to helping patients. And of course — learning how to perform surgery.
