Not Just a Long Weekend…A Sacred Reminder We chose to share this message after Memorial Day, when the cookouts have cooled and the crowds have gone home, because sometimes the most meaningful moments of reflection come in the quiet. First Air Commando Group – Air Commandos have the pleasure of many “firsts”. Did you know the first use of a helicopter in combat was by an Air Commando? On 22 Apr 1944, Lt Col Clinton Gaty, led a flight of six R-4 helicopters on a daring combat search and rescue mission behind enemy lines! Technical Sergeant Ed “Murphy” Hladovcak, the pilot of a Stinson L-1A Vigilant liaison airplane, had crashed in the jungle behind Japanese lines while transporting three wounded British soldiers. The search and rescue mission was to take six R-4 helicopters deep into the jungle and locate the downed aircraft and personnel.
