Tap tap…is the🎙️ still on? This work has been in the works for a long time! We studied the growth behaviors and cell cycle timing of individual TB bacilli and ended up with a series of surprises and a lot of new questions. 1/5 nature.com/articles/s41564-0…

Finally, it is thought that a broad range of cell types grow exponentially at the single-cell level, but we find that Mtb grow linearly, implying that we need to study what processes Mtb use to control growth as it is fundamentally different from other studied cell types. 4/5

Together this project really underscores the importance of studying fundamentals of cell biology in non-model organisms. This was a really challenging project made possible by an incredible collaboration with Eun Seon Chung, @Ariel_4321, and @KarPrathitha. 5/5 #tuberculosis

.@trevercsmith of @TuftsMedSchool has been named winner of the #BAL 2024 Emerging Leader Award. Dr. Smith will receive $150K for his pioneering research on combination therapies for persistent #Lymedisease. His work aims to create a first-of-its-kind drug interaction compendium to better target persistent Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) infections. This could lead to more effective treatments, offering new hope for those w/ persistent #Lyme. Read the full release here: bit.ly/4d3Slu1 #Lymediseaseresearch #Lymetherapeutics

Ooops! I tagged the wrong Ariel - sorry about that @Ariel_4321 !!!

As more types of bacteria are used for fundamental studies of cell biology, I think we will discover that there is far more diversity in the interworking of cells than previously believed 5/5

We have yet to understand why or how Mtb grow linearly and how they systematically create so much heterogeneity, but it is clear that to understand the single-cell characteristics of Mtb, we have to continue to study the pathogen itself 4/5

Most cell types have an exponential growth mode at single-cell level, but we discovered that Mtb growth is linear. We find that Mtb’s (slow) growth has a unique linear growth mode that is overlayed on more cell-to-cell variation than in model organisms 3/5

We report the characteristics of Mtb growth & cell cycle timing for the first time. We find a LOT of variation in growth speed, cell size, and cell cycle timing. But unlike in M. smegmatis, there is not a deterministic relationship between growth pole age & growth behaviors 2/5

Congratulations to @CarolynBertozzi! Thanks for making tools to help us understand #tuberculosis and also for training amazing colleagues :) @siegristpalmore @jcslab @MireilleKamariz
Carolyn Bertozzi – awarded the 2022 #NobelPrize in Chemistry – has taken click chemistry to a new dimension and started utilising it in living organisms. Her bioorthogonal reactions take place without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell.
